5 top tips for crochet beginner: Learning Crochet Untangled

Sharing is caring!

Howdy everyone! Sara  from crochetbusiness is here to  share a great tips for crochet beginner  with us today. Let’s go!

Craft yarn council did a market survey in 2011 and found 87% of the people surveyed taught someone to knit or crochet.
That’s a lot of people picking up hooks and needles. That’s up 7% since 2010.

These aren’t folks in retirement homes either. Knitters and crocheters between the ages of 18-24 taught an average 4.6 people the craft. (Source: http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/know.html)

Crochet is all over the place. Yarn bombing and amigurumi helped put the spotlight on crochet. I believe learning crochet will continue to increase as more crafters share their love of the fiber arts.

Are you thinking of picking up a ball of yarn and hook?

Here are 5 simple tips to keep you untangled while you learn.

1. Be Patient – learning anything takes time.

If you’ve never worked with a hook and yarn you might find that your fingers, the yarn, and your brain will be out of sync. Don’t quit. You will get the hang of it soon enough.

2. Take one stitch at a time.

I know those amigurumi dolls are super cute but take your time to learn the basics. You’ll appreciate the many scarves done in boring stitches once you develop your crochet mojo.

3. Ask Questions

Don’t be afraid to ask a question if you don’t know something. Every crocheter was a newbie at some point. Crocheters don’t bite – be brave and ask that seemingly “stupid” question even if you’ve asked it ten times before.

4. Practice

No matter what you’re trying to learn whether it be algebra or crochet – the key to mastery is practice. When your teacher tells you to practice 200 rows of single crochet it’s not to bore you to death. There is a method to her madness.

Crocheting is about knowing the right stitches, holding your hook right and working on your tension.

The more you practice the less awkward holding the hook becomes. You’ll find your groove and you will no longer have stitches that are too tight or too loose.

 5. Make it fun

Above all else make this something you enjoy. Crafting is suppose to relieve stress not cause it. Hang out with friends, chat, and have a glass of wine.

Go get your hook and yarn and start hooking.

My grandchildren all want to learn how to crochet things, and I only barely know how myself. I also have a lefty in the middle of the group. I am truly hoping that if I allow a little time every day to work on this skill, that the next time I visit I will be more able to actually teach them what to do. Last time, there were sighs, and polite decisions to go and do something else. ):

These are great tips! I learned to crochet about 35 years ago from my grandma. I said in front of her, like looking in a mirror - because I'm left handed. I didn't crochet for YEARS, then got the desire to start again. It seems it's "just like riding a bike", I never did forget the basics. I still consider myself a beginner, but I am enjoying learning new stitches to create some pretty nice blankets and many dishcloths! I have not attempted anything fancy or shaped yet. A great resource that I use often is YouTube. You can search for left handed crocheting, then narrow that down by stitch. I'm working on my second "ripple" blanket now!
