This beginner-friendly buttoned cowl not only works up quickly but also perfect for less experienced crocheters.

This cowl pattern only takes a few basic crochet stitches, half double crochet, and slip stitch alternate all the way through the entire rectangle.

Yep, that’s right, this crochet cowl with buttons is made from only one rectangle! Super simple.

To crochet a cozy button cowl, I used worsted weight yarn, 100% acrylic in 10 ply, or you girl could go for 5 chunky weight, and It’s taken me only one evening to complete it.

If you are a crochet ninja like me, probably takes the same amount of time to complete, but if you are a baby level, maybe take two evenings to finish them. ^^

Supplies & materials.

  • I used   Lion brand wool Ease chunky yarn, or for non-wool I recommend Brava Bulky yarn from knit pick.
  • Yarn weight five chunky or 10 ply
  • 6 mm crochet hook 
  • Sewing yarn needle
  • Two wooden buttons. I used wooden buttons that are 1 inch wide or your preferred choice. The bigger button is always best.

  • (American crochet terms)
  • You will need to know how to make
  • Sl st (slip stitch)
  • sc which means single crochet
  • hdc, which means half double crochet
  • ch, Chain
  • slip knot

  • 10 inches wide
  • 6 inches long when unbuttoned

Start off by making a slip knot, Then makes 100 chains of foundation chain.

(you can adjust the length of the cowl by decreasing the foundation chain like.. 80,100, or 120)

Row1.    sc in the next chain from hook,  then sc in each chain across until the end of the row, ch1 turn.

Row2.  *hdc in next st, then sl st in next st*      repeat * to * across until the end of the row. Ch1 turn

Repeat row 2 until piece measures approximately 36 inches long and 10 inches wide or desired length.  Fasten off.

Assemble.

Weave in all ends with a yarn needle.

To make the “collar,” fold the top edge outward about 2 inches wide or more, depend how thick of the collar you want to be.

After we create the collar then, we will adding buttons on crochet cowl scarf to secure the collar and then overlap both ends of the cowl scarf, then sew both ends together to secure it.

If I am understanding the pattern correctly, you do not skip any stitches at the beginning of the rows. You go into the first stitch correct? And each row ends with a slip stitch and turning chain.

Are the buttons just for decoration? Also are ends sewn together so cowl has to go over your head rather than using buttons to fasten

Button , they are just decorate, yes the cowl sew end together and when you wear it have to go over the head.
