Easy shell stitch crochet headband free pattern

When I was first learning how to crochet, the shell stitch seemed incredibly challenging. Now, looking back, I have to admit that, they are one of my favorite stitches.

I realized the other day that I don’t get to use it enough, so I thought I’d try my hand at making a headband. Hence, the easy shell stitch headband pattern was born!

First, let me just say that you can make this in any color you want. I like the aqua color for Spring and Summer, but you can customize this for any season, any outfit, or with any yarn you have laying around the house.

It’s exceptionally versatile in terms of length too. If your head is a bit bigger, add some more stitches. If you’re making it for a child, eliminate some of the repeating shells. You can make it whatever you need it to be.

You know I love cotton yarn, so it should come as no surprise that I picked cotton for this.

Besides the fact that it’s so much nicer to work with, it’s also a lot less scratchy on your head! It does take more than scraps, so make sure you have enough left in your skein to complete it or prepare to switch it up half-way through.

If you’re a crochet beginner, this is a fabulous free pattern to get used to the shell stitch.

It shouldn’t take you more than 45-minutes or so to whip up your first headband. If you’re a seasoned crocheter, you can get a few of them done in under an hour.

One of the things that I like best about this headband pattern is that it’s perfect just as it is.

You don’t need any extra embellishments, it just looks fabulous. That being said, I love to add appliques to things, so I have a couple of them that I’ve added small crochet hearts to to dress them up.

Let’s get start!

For this project you will need to know crochet basic stitches.

Let’s start with a supplies.
– I used scraps yarn or Lion brand 24/7 cotton

– 3.50mm crochet hook or E/4 US hook size

– Sewing yarn needle

(you can make them bigger or smaller by using bigger or smaller size crochet hooks)

Start with

Before you start making  chain you want to leave long tail for tie up the headband.

Chain 71,  (then 5dc in the next stitch from hook, then skip 1 stitch and sl st in next) repeat them across. For the other side repeat the same thing. The end
