Best yarn for this crochet cowl scarf.
To crochet a cozy button cowl, I used worsted weight yarn, 100% acrylic in 10 ply, or you girl could go for 5 chunky weight, and It’s taken me only one evening to complete it.
If you are a crochet ninja like me, probably takes the same amount of time to complete, but if you are a baby level, maybe take two evenings to finish them. ^^

If I am understanding the pattern correctly, you do not skip any stitches at the beginning of the rows. You go into the first stitch correct? And each row ends with a slip stitch and turning chain.

Are the buttons just for decoration? Also are ends sewn together so cowl has to go over your head rather than using buttons to fasten
