Easy crochet sun hat pattern.

The month of April just started, and April is the hottest month in Thailand, and I have been sweltering.

So, what’s a crochet girl do? Crochet a sun hat, of course!

I love, love, love wide-brim hats because they protect your face from all different angles,  except if the sun ray reflects from the bottom up lol.

Oh well the hat cannot help; this will give its job to the sunscreen for sure.

As always, the crochet summer hat pattern was created with beginners in mind, so don’t worry if you don’t have a lot of crochet experience. You’ll be able to whip this summer sun hat up in no time!

Tips & tricks for crocheting brimmed hats.

Make the brim hold its shape, not too floppy:

1: hold yarn double when crocheting the brim:

Since I actually wanted the brim of the hat to have some shape, I used cotton yarn in the summer hat pattern.

I also recommend holding double the yarn while crocheting. That means you’ll need two skeins and be holding the yarn from each skein at the same time.

This added thickness allows the brim to be wide without being too floppy.

2: Switch to a smaller crochet hook when crocheting the brim.

If you are not familiar with holding yarn double when crocheting you can just switch to a smaller crochet hook when crocheting the brim.

Because a smaller crochet hook will make your crochet stitch dent tighter and will make a wide brim to hold its shape beautifully.

You can make the hat in any color, but if you plan on going out in the sun a lot, choose a lighter color so that it absorbs less heat.

I want to make this hat for a friend and need to make to fit her head circumference of 24.5 inches, which I’m guessing is extra large. I did see your note above about increasing/decreasing but it wasn’t clear to me how to increase the hat size - I’m truly a beginner. Could you please provide me with instructions on how to make the hat to fit 24.5inch head circumference. Thankyou so much.

Do you connect each row and work in the round or no? Having trouble starting. Usually I work in the round and chain one up for each row.

How many skeins total do you use for this hat? I was planning to use a cotton yarn, but the skeins come only in 2.5 oz size
